weeknotes #18

Weeknotes 26/04/2026 - 03/04/2026

Note from 18/05/2026: I'm behind again - a couple of holidays and a bit of a slump too.

Things I've done โœŽแฐ.๐Ÿ““๐Ÿ—’ หŽหŠห—

Films (and TV) ๐Ÿฟ๐ŸŽฅโœฎโ‹†ห™

I watched Denmark. It seemed topical - a Welshman living in poverty in a dead end town sees a documentary about Danish prisons. He decides they look so much better than his life that he's going to go to Demark and commit a crime to get arrested.

I really didn't like this film! The tone is all over the place, and although I know there are deprived parts of Wales I did not appreciate it being portrayed this way on film in what felt like a pretty careless way. The Danish plot involved him immediately getting taken in by a kind Danish lady (with a child - who with a child would invite a strange, volatile man into their home?) The jokey tone did not vibe with the more serious parts and the whole thing felt unrealistic in a way that felt disrespectful to the actual social problems bought up in the film.

This made me want to watch an Aki Kaurismรคki film instead, who I feel handles these social issues much better with his dead-pan style.

I've been feeling ๐Ÿซ€๐Ÿฉน๐Ÿฅ€โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

A bit weird.

I'm looking forward to

I've been reading ๐Ÿต๐Ÿ“–

I finished Brian by Jeremy Cooper. It's an interesting book, an intense character study about a lonely middle ages man who finds community of a sort in joining a group of "buffs" who obsessively watch films at the BFI. It's about finding community - but also the limits of community for someone on the outskirts of society.

I'm still reading The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett and enjoying it a lot.

Some photos

A picture of a red building with a balcony, containing pot plants. The balcony is flying a red flag with three yellow circles arranged horizontally across it. The building is photographed against a blue sky.

A photo of a boat, docked in a busy harbour with many other boats in the background. There is a bench on the deck of the boat, against the cabin. There is a small brown and white dog sitting on the bench. Above the bench is a gold sign that says Eica

A photo of a stone pillar with the house number 48 carved into it, next to a wall. A ginger cat is laying on the wall, looking to the right.

See you next week ๐Ÿ‘‹
