weeknotes 28

Another week, another late weeknotes. Sometimes I feel I should split these up - my friend's wedding deserves it's own post, as do some of the films I watched, and I'm really enjoying my current book and the quotes I've picked out... I hope someone reads the whole way through :)

I'm looking forward to

Films ๐Ÿฟ๐ŸŽฅโœฎโ‹†ห™

Many films this week so they're going under a details tab. Click here to see them and my thoughts.

High and Low

What a film! It took me awhile while to sink into but it's so good. The length really let you get immersed in the story. There's a nightclub scene towards the end which is just fantastic.

Killer of Sheep

This film is black and white film from the 1970's presenting a series of vignettes about living in Watts, LA. This was a student film, and it's like visual poetry. Two things stood out to me - the scenes of children playing, especially a shoot of children jumping between buildings overhead as two men walk down an alley, and the songs picked for the soundtrack which fit perfectly - Earth Wind and Fire, Dinah Washington.

The Swimmer

Weird little 1968's movie based on a short story by John Cheever (The Swimmer). Interestingly done, with an air of horror and some things to say about toxic masculinity, but parts of the film I found too overwrought and silly to really land.

Ping Pong

A very fun 80s film about a Chinese-British family and the Chinese-British lawyer tasked with executing the will of their patriarch. This was incredibly charming, especially the lead character, Elaine, who is very British and unapologetic about it to everyone who suggests she should behave differently. We had a introduction to the film which reflected on why this didn't take off and lead to more films on the British-Chinese experience (Black british and british south asian culture tends to be more represented on film). I like this film more the more I think about it - so many weird and funny scenes - she watches old wuxia films with one of the waiters, she has a cream pie battle with one of the family's sons, she also brings the family together in quite a touching way.

I've been feeling ๐Ÿซ€๐Ÿฉน๐Ÿฅ€โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

Things I've done โœŽแฐ.๐Ÿ““๐Ÿ—’ หŽหŠห—

Went to my friend's wedding - I can't really capture how nice it was in words.

I've been reading ๐Ÿต๐Ÿ“–

Still reading The Night Manager by LeCarre...

โ€œAnd gradually it dawned on him, if a dawning can take place in total blackness, that his life has consisted of a run of rehearsals for a play he had failed to take part in. And that what he needed to do from now on, if there was going to be a now on, was abandon his morbid quest for order and treat himself to a little chaos, on the grounds that while order was demonstrably no substitute for happiness, chaos might open the way to it.โ€

โ€œThere's no such thing as a decision. There never was. There's whether you've had a good day or a bad day, there's going forward because there's nothing behind and running because if you stand still any longer you'll fall over.โ€

I'm happy little poems has started posting poems again.

Enjoyed this article about drinking every cocktail - it made me hanker for a Porto flip, which I had once at the recommendation of a friend at a now shut cocktail bar where I live.

I found this linked on jeddacp's postroll - a post about developing old rolls of film. Really interesting and a nostalgic reflection on memories.
