weeknotes #5

Weeknotes 02/02/2026 - 08/02/2026

Ok, my new philosophy for weeknotes: Even if it's late, try and get a week notes out every week, and aim for 52 over the year. In that vein, start including the dates.

Things I've done โœŽแฐ.๐Ÿ““๐Ÿ—’ หŽหŠห—

Did some rope climbing this week(end) and met up with some climbing friends I hadn't seen since Christmas.

Played some darts in a pub.

Almost all of my personal diary notes this week are about work, so I guess that covered most of what I've been doing.

Films (and TV) ๐Ÿฟ๐ŸŽฅโœฎโ‹†ห™

I watched No Other Choice and The Devil's Backbone in cinemas this week. Total cinema ticket expense this week: ~ ยฃ23. Both great films.

Also several films at home: The Wind That Shakes The Barley, set set during the Irish War of Independence (1919โ€“1921) and the Irish Civil War (1922โ€“1923) .

Every time a colony wants independence, the questions on the agenda are: a) how do you get the imperialists out, and b) what kind of society do you build? There are usually the bourgeois nationalists who say, 'Let's just change the flag and keep everything as it was.' Then there are the revolutionaries who say, 'Let's change the property laws.' It's always a critical moment. Ken Loach

I also watched The Green Ray ~ I have to write a whole post about this film at some point, it's one of my favourites.

I've been feeling ๐Ÿซ€๐Ÿฉน๐Ÿฅ€โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

Introspective? It seems like everyone in the UK in the moment is complaining about the incessant rain and I don't want to be a clichรฉ but it is getting to be a big downer (especially when your main mode of transport is cycling).

Did some CBT exercises around work, which I'm continuing to find stressful. Reflected on the progress I'd made communicated in my relationship, which feels good, like I am changing some things.

I'm looking forward to

My parents are visiting this week, and we'll go out for dinner.

Going to see Wuthering Heights in the cinema for Valentine's Day with a big group of friends - excited for it to be terrible ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

I've been reading ๐Ÿต๐Ÿ“–

Still reading Frankenstein.

I finished Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont - it wasn't really the lighter read I expected, although the quality of the writing made it an easy read. Here's a review I wrote on Pagebound:

A quietly devasting book about old age. There are some really beautiful observational lines in here - and some incredibly cutting ones too. Overall it's too bleak to be charming, but there are charming scenes (would be too bleak to add "like life" to the end of this sentence). The skilful, economical writing makes this a joy to read. Every part feels crafted.

Guestbooks!

Meadow has fixed their Azure account problems which means my guestbook is back up :) Here's a celebratory tune.

See you next week ~ ๐Ÿ‘‹
