why do anything, micro thoughts

At the pub on Saturday with some friends of my boyfriend for a birthday. One of them started talking about a bike race he was going to on the weekend, and my boyfriend was like "you're going to drive two hours there, two hours back, to get your head kicked in for two hours, spending longer in the car than on the bike, and you enjoy this? I don't get it" - they went back and forth on this so awhile. Eventually our other friend chipped in with "why do anything?".

It's a good point.

No one hard launches their relationships any more? Is this a British thing? It's it because we're all in our thirties and it's vaguely embarrassing to say someone is your boyfriend? Now, when my friends start dating, I find out because when I organise something in the group chat they say "oh, is it ok if I bring Dave along?" and I say yes even though I've no idea who Dave is, and it turns out they're dating (this is never mentioned directly).
